Fig

Obtained from the fig tree (Ficus carica). From the botanical point of view, the fig is not a fruit but an infructescence (that is, a set of fruits). o The fruit is soft, sweet tasting, its interior is reddish-white, where the seeds are lodged. They are very seasonal and can be found in several different varieties. The popular expression "de higos a brevas" (from figs to figs) is quite revealing of the peculiarities of this nutritious food. The saying refers to a very long period of time, always counting the months between the season of figs and the beginning of the season of heathers, and never the other way around. The first ones are on the market from the end of July until the arrival of autumn, while the latter appear at the end of spring.
